Foreign Skilled Worker

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is one of the three programs within Canada’s Express Entry system for processing permanent residency applications. All programs within Express Entry are competitive and use the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates. Based on their credentials, applicants are awarded CRS points.

The processing time for the FSW stream is 6 months.

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the program requirements:

  • Skilled work experience
    • Must work in one of the following NOC job groups:
      • Managerial jobs (skill type 0)
      • Professional jobs (skill level A)
      • Technical jobs and skilled trades (skill level B)
    • Must be within the last 10 years;
    • Must work at least 30 hours a week (full-time);
  • Show that you have enough funds to help yourself and your dependents after you move to Canada;
  • Meet least language levels in English or French;
    • Reach a minimum of level 7 on an approved English or French language test.Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)
  • Have the appropriate education;
    • A minimum of a Canadian high school diploma or the equivalent in foreign education.
  • Residence in Canada
    • You must intend to live outside of the province of Quebec.
  • OPTIONAL:
    • Have an employment offer letter.

Once you receive the Invitation to Apply, applicants and the accompanying dependants must also undergo medical examinations and obtain security clearances as part of application process.

You will get points for your:

  • Education;
  • Language Abilities;
  • Your work experience;
  • Your age;
  • If you have an offer of employment for work in Canada.
